Our Mission

CUES' mission is to give quality training and education, build self-confidence and self-worth, and offer a realistic vehicle for self-sufficiency and independence in a caring and supportive environment.

Our Medical Assistant and Medical Billing training programs live up to that mission in the fast-growing healthcare industry. However, CUES does not begin or end with job training. CUES' case management and job placement services are designed to expand economic opportunities. We identify job vacancies in the medical field and help students market their newly honed skills as they compete for those opportunities.

Our Founding & Growth

CUES was founded in 1995 by Harriet Garrett, an African-American female, who witnessed children starving for economic exposure and created a plan to feed their minds. Today’s organization began with this one individual going into Philadelphia public schools and exposing young people to fiscal responsibility and entrepreneurial development.  Later, partnering with the NAACP, she expanded this youth business program and Next Generation CDC emerged.

In 1999, Garrett turned her community development sights on adult education and training for the job market. Next Generation was awarded a contract with the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation (PWDC) in the Single Point of Contact program (SPOC) for TANF public assistance clients. Medical Assistant and Medical Billing training ensued as well as critical life skills, literacy, and math courses.

Organizational growth and a move to an approximately 15,000 sq. ft. facility located centrally at 121 North Broad Street spurred the program’s return to its independent roots under CUES.  We now have moved to our new Philadelphia location at:  1341 Deleware Avenue - Suite 201.

From the start this program, Garrett  recognized the special needs of low-income/very low-income TANF clients and has continued along those lines. Strength-based, multi-disciplinary case management orients each student to 24 weeks of educational opportunities. Next, individual progress is  monitored through our comprehensive medical and administrative training.

Some 500 women have been trained since the program’s inception. Since moving to Broad Street about 130 students enter the program annually, but there is capacity for more--a total of 100 students per 24-week session. Our educational packages are designed to fit individual needs. Please review our course descriptions to see which one is right for you.
